Maritime English-support level

1.1          Scope

The model course has been developed to cover the competences related to the English language in the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended. It sets out the education and training mean to achieve the standards set out in the STCW code.

1.2          Learning Objective

The objectives of course are to,

  • Develop the trainee’s ability to use English to the Elementary language level.
  • Teach GME, as recommended in the English language guidelines of part B-VI/1 of the STCW Code.
  • Improves the trainee’s competence in English language to the level required to progress to the Intermediate language level.
  • Prepare trainee’s for developing the knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) in the English language requires by the STCW Code;
  • Give the trainee wide-ranging opportunities to practice communicating in English for both maritime and general purpose at the elementary language level.
  • Provide instructors with a suggested framework for introducing selected topics from the standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP), as required by the STCW Code.

1.3          COURSE Duration

                Total Duration = 60 Hrs

 

1.4         Entry Standards / Learner staTUS

The course is open to:

  • Persons who are aged not less than sixteen (16) years old on the date of commencement of the course.
  • Learners who are able to use English for very basic, everyday needs without sustained fluency and with many errors. Has a limited understanding of spoken English, required a lot

of rephrasing, repetition and simplification of language.
