SMA Graduates Master the Seas with RYA Day Skipper Qualification

Victoria, Seychelles – July 28, 2024 – A dedicated group of Seychelles Maritime Academy (SMA) graduates successfully completed the rigorous RYA Day Skipper Sailing course today, marking a significant milestone in their maritime careers. The internationally recognized course, accredited by the Royal Yacht Association (RYA) of the UK, was expertly delivered by instructors from the Ocean Sailing Academy, based right here in Mahé.

The intensive two-week program pushed both SMA learners and one SMA instructor through stringent paces, covering a comprehensive curriculum. The first week was dedicated to the crucial theoretical aspects of navigation, safety boat handling, and the essential rules of the road. The second week brought the theory to life with hands-on practical sailing onboard a monohull sailing vessel.

The course culminated in a simple yet proud certificate ceremony held on Friday at SMA’s newly constructed quay. The event was attended by the Principal Minister, SMA staff, and members of the media, all on hand to congratulate the graduates on their achievement.

While the SMA graduates will continue to accumulate vital sailing hours to further advance to the Day Skipper level, the dedicated SMA instructor is set to progress even further, aiming for the Offshore Skipper qualification and eventually an RYA instructor certification.
